This piece chronicles the pioneering flood mitigation efforts of Gilbert White, who revolutionized the science of flood control. The lessons he passed on helped save the city of Boulder, Colorado from one of the worst floods in recorded history.

North of Boulder, the Town of Lyons was devastated by the September floods. This trailer park was entirely destroyed.

Above Boulder, the mountain town of Salida saw enormous destruction. In the dead of night, a mudslide caved in the back of this house, pinning two occupants beneath mud and rock.
